Docks and lifts on Washington Island
Washington Island is not a peninsula errand. It is a highway to Northport, a ticket on the Washington Island Ferry across Death’s Door, and then more island road to Detroit Harbor or the lake shore. The boat is year-round in theory. Wind and ice in Porte des Morts are real. If you own a dock here and live in the cities, spring is a ferry schedule plus ice-out, not a Saturday from Sister Bay.
Door County Dock & Lift does seasonal install and removal, repair, boat lifts, and shore stations on the island by arrangement. Visits are scheduled around the ferry, not a mainland calendar. Local 920 number goes here once the tenant is on the phone.
Why docks fail on the island
The island has two waters. Detroit Harbor and the ferry side are one job. The Lake Michigan shore is another: more fetch, different ice, fewer people to notice a racked lift. A “Washington Island” address does not tell us which. Name the harbor.
Death’s Door is the passage, not a slogan. Equipment and crews have to cross it. If the ferry is down or the wind is wrong, we do not invent a visit. Ice-out on the island is not the same week as Egg Harbor. A standing peninsula route that promises “we will be there Tuesday” is a lie if the boat is not running.
Rock Island State Park is a further ferry and not a residential dock route. Schoolhouse Beach is a landmark. Neither is a service claim.
Storage, parts, and a second trip for a missing pin cost more here than in Sturgeon Bay. The quote should say so.

- Do you come over for one small repair?
- Ask. Ferry time is real. Small jobs sometimes ride with a larger island day. We will not pretend a Sister Bay hour-rate applies.
- Is this a standard winter route?
- No. Winter crossing depends on the ferry and the passage. Fall pull should happen before that becomes a question.
