Docks and lifts in Sturgeon Bay and on the ship canal

Sturgeon Bay is the year-round city on the peninsula and the cut that makes Door County an island in slow motion: the ship canal connecting Green Bay to Lake Michigan, the bridges, the shipyards. In July the canal is pleasure boats under the shadow of Bay Shipbuilding. In January it is ice, working water, and a lot of residential docks sitting on the lawn or still in where they should not be. If you own waterfront here and live in Milwaukee or farther, the dock is the part of the place that actually meets that canal.

Door County Dock & Lift is seasonal install and removal, repair, boat lifts, and shore stations for Sturgeon Bay and the peninsula. Not a marina. Not a cottage-watch company. Local 920 number goes here once the tenant is on the phone.

Why docks fail here

Sturgeon Bay is not one shore. A lot on the bay side of the city sees Green Bay ice and seiche. A lot on the canal takes ship wake, current, and a freeze line that does not match the tourist photos. The Lake Michigan mouth — canal station, the east end — takes open-lake energy the downtown slips never see. Name which water. A quote written for a sheltered canal wall is the wrong quote for the lake side.

Ice lifts seasonal piers. Hardware fatigues. A shore station that was level in August is racked after one shove. Fall removal that waits until the first hard freeze is how people buy a new lift in May.

This is a working port. That does not mean your residential dock is being watched. It means barge and crane access is sometimes easier here than in Fish Creek’s tight harbor, and it means we still need to see your actual bottom — rock, muck, or wall.

What we do in Sturgeon Bay

Seasonal install and removal. Spring set, fall pull, routed with southern Door and then north on 42.

Repair. Decking, frames, cribs, wheels, lift cables and motors, storm-bent sections.

New docks and lifts. When repair is the wrong answer. Permanent work may need permits; seasonal residential is a different class. We will say which.

Storm salvage. After ice or a blow, pull it before it beats itself to scrap.

Starting point: written quote after a shoreline visit. No published per-foot price.

How it works in Sturgeon Bay

  1. Shoreline visit, or a tight photo set if you are not up — then we still confirm on site before steel goes in the water.
  2. Written quote for install/remove, repair, or new.
  3. We run it on the peninsula route. Canal jobs and lake-mouth jobs are not the same day as a Sister Bay pull unless the schedule honestly allows it.

Reviews coming as we complete the first season.

Sturgeon Bay FAQ

Can you work on the canal, or only the bay?
Both, plus the Lake Michigan mouth. Tell us which. Wake, ice, and bottom change the hardware.
Do you store the dock in winter?
If the tenant has yard space, that will be an add-on on the quote. Until then, assume you have a place on the lot or a storage plan. We will not invent a warehouse.
